                                                                        The Fear

               The Fear by Charlie Higson is a book about survival. It's about what will happen if children are left to their own devices in a hostile world. It lets us take a look at what we could become in a world that's out to get us. It makes us experience many different emotions like the main character Dognut who experiences determination, anger, fear, guilt, and even joy.
               One of the first emotions Dognut experiences in the book is determination.
               "He was going to make something to himself. He was going to find Brooke, the prettiest girl in London. He was going to bring her back." This shows that he was going to stop at nothing to find his friends.
               Another emotion he felt was guilt. In the house of an extremely strong zombie one of the group gets left behind.
              "They'd ran off without her, now he was coming."
              "I promised her. I said I wouldn't leave her. She was counting on me... I can't just leave her!" This shows he was angry about leaving her and guilty for not going back.
              Dognut's emotions in the book show that the experiences in the book influence Dognut's emotions as well as our own. An important thing in this book is making the readers get attached to a character and then killing that character to get an emotional response. This in one thing Charlie Higson is especially good at.

         Do you have a family member who served in the war? Did you ever want to know their story? Art Spiegelman did, and he even wrote two books about his father's experiences as a prisoner in World War two. The book "Maus" by Art Spiegelman is about Spiegelman's father Valdek in the holocaust. The book is also about Art getting the information from Valdek. Throughout the book Art asks Valdek questions about his experiences. Not only does Valdek tell Art about his problems in the war but Art observes Valdeks problems with his greedy wife and financial problems.

           Because of the war, Valdek saves everything and hordes all the stuff that he thinks he needs. The war made him very paranoid and strict. In the war he was resourceful and smart. Art doesn't want to have to take care of Valdek. He instead wants to hire a nurse. Valdek won't spend any money at all. He's afraid to use any of it even though he has so much money. His wife Malda is unhappy. She wants to spend money and have fun but Valdek won't let her. Malda then steals all the money in their joint account, even the money going to Art in Valdeks will.

          In the end Valdek stays in the hospital after having a stroke. Art tries to get more answers but Valdek tells him to stop. He dies peacefully in his sleep on August 18, 1982.
